Hubei: From Yangtze Metropolises to Rural Heartland
Hubei Province, situated in the heart of Central China, is a region defined by its deep history and the life-giving waters of the Yangtze River. This collection of photos documents several journeys through a landscape of dramatic contrasts—from the high-speed pulse of the provincial capital, Wuhan, to the intimate traditions of my partner Qu’s ancestral home.
Wuhan, known as the "Thoroughfare of Nine Provinces," is a sprawling megacity where ancient landmarks like the Yellow Crane Tower overlook a futuristic skyline and massive river bridges. Moving north, the city of Xiaogan—named for the traditional value of filial piety—serves as a gateway to Hubei’s agricultural soul.
The journey continues into the smaller township of Tangchi and the village of Dalu. Here, the modern world feels distant, replaced by the authentic rhythms of rural life. These images capture personal and profound moments: from traditional ceremonies at family grave sites and local turtle farms to the simple beauty of the original 1960s village houses where Qu grew up. Together, they tell a story of a province caught between rapid development and the enduring strength of family roots.

About this photoalbum
In February 2026, I reorganized my entire collection of photos from my travels in China spanning 2009 to 2025. Previously, the images were sorted by year, with locations nested under each trip. However, analytics show that more than 80% of my visitors come from China and Singapore. For them —and hopefully for many others— I believe this new structure is much more intuitive. The photos are now organized by location, with provinces and major cities as the primary categories. Under each destination, you will find subfolders for the specific years and months of my visits.
