Chongqing: The Vertical Mountain City

Chongqing is perhaps China’s most visually stunning metropolis, built into the steep hills at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Known as the "Mountain City," its unique geography has created a vertical urban landscape where monorails pass through apartment buildings and roads exist on multiple levels. It is a city of fog, neon, and incredible energy. Chongqing serves as the gateway to the Three Gorges, with many travelers starting their river cruises from its bustling docks.

At night, the city transforms into a glittering sea of lights, best viewed from the stilted architecture of Hongyadong, a complex that looks like something out of a fairy tale. Beyond its futuristic skyline, Chongqing is famous for its fiery spirit—specifically its legendary hot pot, which is considered the spiciest and most authentic in China. With its steep alleys, massive bridges, and the nearby UNESCO-listed Dazu Rock Carvings, Chongqing offers a raw and powerful glimpse into the heart of modern inland China.

About this photoalbum

In February 2026, I reorganized my entire collection of photos from my travels in China spanning 2009 to 2025. Previously, the images were sorted by year, with locations nested under each trip.

However, analytics show that more than 80% of my visitors come from China and Singapore. For them —and hopefully for many others— I believe this new structure is much more intuitive. The photos are now organized by location, with provinces and major cities as the primary categories. Under each destination, you will find subfolders for the specific years and months of my visits.
