Xi’an: The Gateway to the Silk Road
Xi’an is one of the oldest cities in China and served as the capital for 13 dynasties, including the prosperous Tang Dynasty. It is most famous globally as the home of the Terracotta Army, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers built to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife. This archaeological wonder is one of the most significant finds of the 20th century.
The city itself is a treasure trove of history. Xi’an’s ancient City Wall, one of the oldest and best-preserved in the country, encircles the city center and offers a unique path for cycling with views of both old and new districts. Another highlight is the Muslim Quarter, a vibrant area reflecting Xi’an’s history as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road. Here, the narrow streets are filled with the scent of spices, traditional markets, and the Great Mosque. Xi’an is a city where every stone seems to tell a story of ancient trade, religious harmony, and imperial grandeur, making it a must-see for anyone interested in China’s roots.
